We Were Exuberant and Still Had Hope

Starting Sunday, January 10, the exhibition We Were Exuberant and Still Had Hope: Ettore Sottsass, works from Stockholm, 1969 , will be accompanied by three so-called notes. These contributions reflect on the ideas inherent in the central object of the exhibition: the Superbox by Ettore Sottsass. The meaning of the Superbox is by definition paradoxal and represents both a fascination for consumer culture as well as a critique on the devistating effects of materialism. The notes entail, respectively, a text by Cristina Ricupero about the city Brasília and the question of modernism and spirituality, a soundwork by Paul Elliman based on recordings of him recreating birdsounds and a series of posters and models by Guy Keulemans, which give a contemporary interpretation of the Superbox. You are cordially invited to attend the opening of the exhibition and the presentation of the notes on the 10th of January at 17:00 pm.

Filmscreening Rock My Religion & guided tour

In the context of the exhibition We Were Exuberant and Still Had Hope: Ettore Sottsass, works from Stockholm, 1969, a filmscreening of Dan Graham's Rock My Religion (55 min.) will take place on Sunday, February 7 at 4 pm. This video-essay from the early eighties - often cited but not often shown - is a provocative discourse on the relationship between religion and rock 'n' roll, the ultimate symbol of godlessness. In a caleidoscopic mixture of documentary, text and performance, Graham draws a parallel between extatic trance dances of the Shakers and the sexually loaded performances of Jim Morrison and Patty Smith. To this day, Rock My Religion is a stunning essay about the ideological codes and the historical context of the cultural phenomenon rock 'n' roll.
Preceding the screening, the monthly guided tour will take place at 3 pm, offered by curator Lisette Smits. Both the filmscreening and the guided tour are included in the normal admission fee.

The Great Expectations Award

Under the title 'Maastricht Youngsters', The City Council of Maastricht commissioned Marres to develop a supporting program for local talent. Not long ago, this led to the presentation of The Great Expectations Award, a new element of the Great Indoors 2009 . Through a 'real experiment' students were confronted with a practical assignment, a commissioner and a physical location. In the course of three weeks, the community of students from the Academy of Visual Arts Maastricht, Design Academy Eindhoven and Media & Design Academy Genk was be guided by a staff of renowned designers from various disciplines such as Jurgen Bey, Alexander van Slobbe, Daniel van der Velden, Vinka Kruk, Wieki Somers, Bart Guldemond, Bas van Tol, and Chris Kabel. The commissioners were Camille Oostwegel (ChateauHotels & Restaurants), Kiki Niesten (Kiki Niesten and Shop Daughters) Paul Rinkens (Conceptisch and Qbic), Hans van Wolde (Beluga) and the Salvation Army. The group which developed a new idea of the 'Sleeping House' for the homeless assigned by the Salvation Army, were chosen as the winners.
